If you reached this blog searching for some technical data on MTBF, you are in the wrong place.
I was in a discussion the other day with an EDA vendor discussing sync flip flops and MTBF and realized that this concept applies to us as well. How many times in a day does your brain reach a meta stable state where you cannot decide what you want to do, or if you want to do something or not. Trying to correlate with flip flops which are more a part of my life than my girlfriend, I think we reach this state when a stimulus hits us before we are in a position to take it, i.e., when life violates our setup or hold time. In a new team now, trying to work with a bunch of guys who have been doing this for the past 5 to six years and there is no sync flop between me and the rest of the team. Going into meta stable state every now and then
